What is an Egg Roll in a Bowl

Eggs rolls are a Chinese appetizer that’s filled with minced meat, cabbage, and vegetables like carrots, and onions. My Egg Roll Bowl ingredients include classic egg roll ingredients plus a delicious sauce that compliments and elevated the dish.

Ground Chicken – Traditionally, egg rolls include meat. This meat can be pork, chicken, or shrimp. Because ground chicken can be harder to find in the grocery store, feel free to use ground turkey. It has the same taste, it’s easier to find, and it’s usually cheaper.

Shredded Cabbage – Egg rolls always include some sort of cabbage. I pick up a bag of pre-shredded cabbage. Of course, you may buy cabbage and shred it yourself. The Asian Salad Kit that’s in most grocery stores is also okay to use. In this kit, it includes romaine lettuce along with cabbage and carrots. It comes with a packet of almond and fried wontons. Be sure to pitch the sauce packet as we won’t be using that. Don’t skip the cabbage because it is the star of this recipe. If you’d like an Asian recipe without cabbage, try my Garlic Sesame Chicken Lettuce Cups.

Carrots – Pick up a small bag of shredded carrots. The carrots that come in the cabbage bag/Salad kit are not enough for this recipe. Plus, the carrots add a nice crunch to this dish.

Snow Peas – A great addition to this recipe is fresh snow peas or sugar snap peas. These can be found next to the bagged salad kits. The snow peas add great texture and flavor to this egg roll bowl recipe.

Fried Wontons – Wontons come in a small square package. I have always found mine in the refrigerated produce section of the grocery store. Wontons can usually be found by the salad kits. To fry your own wontons, add vegetable oil ( about 1/4 cup) to a saucepan. Place a fresh wonton wrapper in the hot oil and fry until golden brown on each side. If you pick up the Asian Salad Kit lettuce bag, it comes with a packet of fried wontons.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground chicken OR ground turkey
  • tbsp soy sauce coconut aminos for keto diet
  • tbsp honey sugar-free maple syrup for keto diet
  • 2 tbsp ketchup optional to taste
  • 1 tsp rice vinegar
  • ¼ tsp sesame oil
  • 5 garlic cloves minced OR 1.5 tsp garlic paste
  • cups shredded carrots
  • cups Asian Salad Kit (in a bag) OR bagged coleslaw I like to use the Asian Salad Kit because it comes with fried wontons
  • cup sugar snap peas or snow peas
  • tsp red pepper flakes, for added heat
  • wontons – see recipe notes
  • 6 green onions, diced

Instructions

  • In a small bowl, combine soy sauce, honey, ketchup, rice vinegar, sesame oil, minced garlic, and red pepper flakes; set aside.

  • In a large rimmed skillet set over medium heat, cook ground chicken (or turkey). Break ground chicken up into little pieces using a spatula. Cook until no longer pink and all the liquid has cooked off; about 6-9 minutes.

  • Pour garlic sesame mixture into skillet. Toss the mixture together until chicken takes on the color of the sauce. The skillet should come to a simmer, cook until most of the liquid is thick and absorbed by the chicken.

  • To the skillet, add shredded cabbage, shredded carrots, and snow peas/sugar snaps. Toss together until coated well.

  • Serve and garnish with fried wontons, and green onions.

  1. How does this recipe keep? Thinking of making a big batch and using it for school lunches, which would be eaten cold throughout the week?

    1. The Asian Garlic Sesame Chicken Egg Roll Bowls can be great for meal prep as the ingredients are fairly stable when stored correctly. Here’s what you can expect and some tips for making it last:

Shelf Life: The chicken mixture should last 3-4 days in the refrigerator. Store it in airtight containers to maintain freshness is always a good idea.

Eating Cold: This dish should taste fine cold, as many of the flavors (like soy, sesame, and garlic) tend to penetrate the ingredients and can even intensify over time. However, the texture of the vegetables might become slightly softer after being stored with the sauce.

Separate the Components: If you’re worried about the veggies getting too soft or the wontons becoming soggy, you might consider storing components separately. For instance, keep the chicken mixture in one container, the veggies in another, and the wontons in a separate zip-top bag. Then, combine them when it’s time to eat.

Wontons: Fried wontons might lose their crunch over time, especially if they’re stored with the moist components of the dish. If crispiness is desired, it might be best to add them just before eating or store them separately and add them to the bowl when serving.

Safety First: Always ensure that the chicken is fully cooked before storing. When reheating, ensure its heated thoroughly; if you’re eating it cold for lunches, just ensure it was initially cooked well.

Container Quality Matters: Use good quality airtight containers to store your meal prep. This will help in retaining the freshness and prevent any contamination.

This was delicious and so easy! Husband and teen son loved it. I have made this before but followed a different recipe. That recipe will be deleted and replace with this one! I followed your recipe exactly except I used turkey sausage instead of ground chicken. So good. Definitely a new favorite! Thank you!
